HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS It is time to apply for outside scholarships

. These are scholarships that do not come from a college or university. They are offered by big and small, national, regional and local organizations that each have their own criteria for winning.

While many of you may have heard of the big scholarships: Gates, Coca Cola, Jackie Robinson, Jack Kent Cooke, There are many more scholarships from organizations in your own city or neighborhood that are overlooked because they do not have the budget to advertise.

Local and regional outside scholarships are your best bet. The big national scholarships are options too, but you will have better chances with local and regional organizations.
When looking for outside scholarships start on Fastweb, Unigo, Scholarships.com, and https://www.pathwaystoscience.org/

Then use Google and Google your state, county/parish, city, region add the following: The word scholarship +Black, +African American, or other ethnicities (for instance you might be Black, Polish and Italian, Google all three), Google the word Scholarship +Divine 9 fraternities and sororities, then the names of the individual Divine 9 for your state, county/parish, city, region, Google the word Scholarships +law firms, restaurants, banks, credit unions, community foundations, Churches/Temples/Mosques/Synagogues for your state, county/parish, city, region

For instance, below is a list of a few scholarships for students who live in DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia. You can Google the name of the scholarship to get the applications and rules.

A very seasoned and wise parent told our family that for every 10 outside scholarships you apply for, you will win 1. So don’t let the process discourage you.

A scholarship organization gave tips to the applicants and said they should try to apply for 100 outside scholarships between now and May 1, 2020. Do 5-10 a week.

Have a resume, 3-4 generic essays that you can adapt to the question asked in the application.

Get your high school registrar to give you 10 official transcripts in sealed envelopes with the school seal or registrars signature on the flap, Ask your recommenders to give you 10 copies of the recommendation letter to you singed and sealed with their name across the flap. Ask a community member, clergy member, coach, scout leader or other mentors to give you 10 copies of a recommendation letter, signed sealed, etc.

Keep a folder of these items along with another folder that has a copy of all of the outside scholarship materials.

Make sure you have at least 60-100 hours of high school community service.
